The Garden Spark
Over this past year I have found that learning to grow things is a positive mental outlet. It’s much needed outside alone time in (mostly) lovely weather. I’ve always known that I wanted to be a gardener on some scale, yet this first year here in the PNW has firmly “rooted” me into the hobby.
When I was younger I had such respect for my family who grew things. Whether it was fruits, vegetables, flowers, or herbs; my family always seemed to know just what they were doing in the garden. Now I realize the trials and learning that accompany each season! That young-child’s perspective probably added even more years to their perceived experience.
Up until last year I’ve only had limited experience growing tomatoes, peppers, basil, beans, and cucumbers while living in Texas. This year I’ve dabbled in potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, kale, peas, beans, broccoli, carrots, onions, radishes, squash, strawberries, basil, mint, and lavender. I’m figuring out how to collect seeds as well. Hopefully next year I’ll get into canning.
As mentioned before, it’s wonderful alone time, yet having my garden dog hanging out with me is always appreciated. Also, the occasionally curious child is always welcomed since there’s nothing like some hands-on learning and shared experiences to grow everyone’s spark.
In the next 5 years my goals is to be able to grow at least 50% of our yearly fruits & veggies. I know that I will need to learn from others, have patience, and accept the losses with the wins. My goal will never happen if I don’t try though!
